E-readers from brands like Amazon, Sony and Barnes & Noble offer an inexpensive, simple alternative to paper books. They’re a popular gadget this year, but choosing from the dozens of popular e-readers on the market can be difficult.

Most e-readers have simple black-and-white screens, which cuts down on battery consumption and makes it easier to read in direct sunlight. The Nook Simple Touch and the original Amazon Kindle are excellent black-and-white e-readers. Both can connect to online bookstores via Wi-Fi and some simple extra features.

Some book fans will simply be looking for an inexpensive e-reader that provides basic functionality with a cheap price tag. Aluratek’s Libre reader is a great low-cost e-reader, but it’s limited by a relatively short 24-hour battery life.

Buyers who can afford to spend the extra money should look into either the Kindle Touch or the Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch. The Kindle has a battery life of up to one month and the Nook Simple Touch claims to be able to run for two months on a single charge, although both battery life estimates are based on about an hour of reading per day.

Travelers should also consider the 6″ versions of the Nook and Kindle, as these lightweight e-readers are easy to pack into a carry-on. The Amazon Kindle 3G is an especially good choice for fast readers, as the built-in 3G connection makes it easy to connect to the Amazon store from virtually anywhere in the United States to download new books, newspapers and magazines.

There are a growing number of tablet e-readers including the extremely popular Kindle Fire and Nook Color. These full-color devices feature high-definition TFT screens, which have a high enough resolution to avoid the eye strain caused by standard computer screens. The Kindle Fire is an exceptional choice in this category, as it uses Google’s Android operating system to deliver an incredible experience with downloadable games, music and streaming movies from services like Netflix. The downside of color e-readers is that they’re much more expensive and battery life is limited to about eight hours.

The right e-reader can make it easy to catch up on new titles, inexpensively-priced classics like “To Kill A Mockingbird” or newspapers like The New York Times. Understanding the features of a few of the most popular e-readers makes it much easier to choose a product that’s perfectly suited to your reading habits.
