ECommerce is big business and an increasing number of entrepreneurs have staked their futures on internet retailing business. Online shopping makes it easy for busy people and those less able to get out and about to be able to obtain the things they need.

People shop for everyday necessities, groceries and annual buys such as Christmas presents and holidays. If you want to make a success of your online retailing business then what follows are a few tips that might benefit you.

Tip 1. Research your target market. You need to know if there is a demand for what you are offering and whether the field is big enough to allow for yet another competitor. Once you know who you want to sell to, the next thing you need is a dedicated website. It is worth spending money and getting a polished and professional looking website as this is good for your business.

Tip 2. If you want to sell your goods or services then people need to be able to find your website and that means marketing your business and networking with other business owners. Unless you get the information out there people will not know who you are or what you offer.

Tip 3. The search engines need to be able to find your website, which means your site needs to be optimised for certain keywords, such as women or children’s clothing.

Research the keywords on Google and Yahoo to see which are the best combinations for your product that will set you apart from your competitors. If you are selling shoes for example, a simple addition like ‘shoes London’ can make your site stand out from others in the same vicinity and offering the same products.

Tip 4. Your web content needs to be optimised. If you want your business to succeed then any written content, e.g. product descriptions, special offers etc. need to be keyword optimised.

Tip 5. Aim to get on page one. Research shows that people rarely look beyond the first five results that Google, Bing or Yahoo throws up. Which means your aim is to get on page one, and ideally within the first five listings.

Tip 6. Make sure that you have concise terms and conditions regarding what you offer, what you do, and what your buyers can expect if they buy from you. This increases buyer trust and thus will improve your conversion rates.

Tip 7. Get a friend to recommend an efulfilment company. When you have an internet retail business you won’t have a bricks and mortar warehouse, which means you need someone to do all the storing, picking, packing and delivery for you.

Tip 8. Put links to any new lines or special offers or any changes to your websites on social media sites such as Twitter and Face book.

Tip 9. Set up a blog and write, or pay someone else to write, fresh content on at least a weekly basis. Having and updating a blog is great both for your search engine rankings and consumer trust in your brand.

Tip 10. Make sure that the efulfilment services you choose has a good customer service record and is noted for their fast despatch and delivery of orders.
