There has been a lot of talk recently about Pixelmator, Mac App Store’s “App of the Year.” A lot of designers are saying this can be the perfect alternative to Photoshop. With Pixelmator winning app of the year it is hard not to ignore statements like that. There are a lot of programs that attempt to imitate Photoshop, but most of the time it seems as though no one can come close. Pixelmator has come close. Very close in fact and for the price it would be hard not to take a trial run. While buying any version of Photoshop can run you hundreds of dollars, Pixelmator is only $29.99 in the app store. Only $30 and with so much to offer.
Pixelmator Features
Pixelmator offers a number of features that designers would love. Some of these features include:
- German, French and Japanese to go along with English
- 150 Filters
- 40 Tools for selecting
- Adjust images for various size and resolutions
- Fill strokes
- Multiple layers
- Prepare for web exporting
- Interface designed to work with images
- Quick access to your photo libraries
Of course you will really have to dive in to see the full potential Pixelator can provide to you. There are a lot good things being said about pixelator by happy customers.
For the most part this is a great product. The images you can make are beautiful, effective, and can even be made for complex web pages helping load times. This is something that would help your on-site SEO and something that every SEO Company would recommend. The amazing thing about this product is that it is being praised by seasoned Photoshop users.
Good Things People are Saying
- “The best 30 dollars I ever spent.”
- After switching to Pixelmator I don’t miss it (Photoshop).
- “Best Valued Application!”
- “Pixelmator is the best made editor to date. I feel bad for Adobe.”
- “Lets me feel like an artist without costing a fortune.”
Those are some pretty impressive views and it is easy from them to see why this application is getting so much attention. However there has been a few bad comments as well, which is understandable. You cannot please everyone.
Bad Things People are Saying
- “Always Crashes!”
- “Some of the tools are half thought out.”
- “Crashes on all three of my computers.”
- “Too simplified.”
- “Very sluggish compared to Photoshop”
I think that any application you are buying should be done after considerable thought. You obviously cannot please everyone, but you should always hear what people are saying, both bad and good.
In my personal opinion I think that it is worth it. I will be purchasing this application and trying out new things when I find time. For $30 you really cannot beat that price and I have heard to many good things not to try it out. After all, it is the app of the year.

A very honest reflection. No doubt all apps have their pros and cons. Most of the negative comments on Pixelmator come indirectly from Pixelmators preference files issues an Pixelmator being so tightly glued onto OS X core technologies. Often crashes get resolved by doing a file permission repair and or deletion of the preference file. Pixelmator is still image editing for the rest of us so professionals thinking they can edit images in billboard sizes or inages with 100+ layers will experience slow performance. It’s all very flattering calling Pixelmator a photoshop replacement but both apps are aimed at different user groups in my opinion. Hence the price tag.
For those who want to see Pixelmator in action and fund our what can be done with it, I can reccomend visiting http://pixelmatortutorials.net . There you’ll find both video and text tutorials that show you want can be done.
