Since I launched my blog more than two months ago, I have experimented with various layouts, themes, moved things around from the right column to the left column, etc. You name it and I have tried it. One thing I haven’t tried is designing a theme for my blog. I selected the current theme because I wanted a 3-column blog which will give me plenty of opportunity to place widgets, adverts, blogrolls, etc. wherever I wish.
Wordpress themes are great because there are hundreds to choose from and they are free. Not all but most of them are free. You can put a blog together with a decent theme quite easily without having to do any programming. That is one of the benefit of using WordPress.
But what about blog personalization? Is it important? I didn’t think much about this until recently when I started advertising my Entrecard. When you create your Entrecard, you design the card to tell people about your blog. Your Entrecard design is unique to you. Imagine someone comes up with Entrecard templates that you can download and just change the text. You will have hundreds if not more of Entrecard with the same design but with different text on them. Don’t you think that will be boring? How can you tell the difference between the cards because they are not carrying a unique message across. This also applies to WordPress themes.
If you want your blog to be unique, one of the ways to make it different is to personalize your WordPress theme. I not saying you have to go and design a complete unique theme for your site from scratch. You can modify your existing theme and give it a face lift. Change the top banner for example to something that tells your viewers about you. I have seen some blogs where just simple changes are made to the existing theme and how amazed I was to see it brings about so much difference.
I know writing pillar articles and content is important for a blogger. So is getting traffic to your blog but don’t dismiss the importance of personalizing your WordPress theme. In the coming week I will attempt changing the top banner of my blog and will compare it alongside to what I have currently to see if there are any improvements.
