Here is an interesting piece of news for all you .NET techies. Yesterday a .NET-based microkernel operating system was released by Chad “Kudzu” Hower, a former Microsoft Developer and Platform Evangelism team member. It is named Cosmos, an acronym for C# Source Managed Operating System. Cosmos is an independent project from Microsoft and is released under the open-source license. That means it is available to everyone.
Where can you use Cosmos?
From what I read, you can boot Cosmos from a floppy or USB stick. Kudzu mentioned that you can try to put Cosmos and .NET on the Wii or OLPC (One Laptop Per Child PC) or the iPhone. With such a compact operating system, the possibility of running .NET on small handheld equipment is limitless.
Kudzu’s definition of Cosmos
Cosmos is a set of operating system legos written completely in C# that allow developers to easily build custom OSes with little OS experience by simply selecting new project in Visual Studio, then pressing F5 to build, deploy, and debug.
You can read Mary Jo Foley (ZDNet) interview with Kudzu here.
