Google’s latest project was announced yesterday – Knol which is a unit of knowledge is a website for knowledge contribution. It aims to promote the authors who contribute through the Google Search Engine and promises to share ad revenue with the authors.
This is how it works – if you have knowledgeable in a topic, you can sign up with Knol and write about your topic. Essentially Knol is created to compete with Wikipedia. It is not any different from a blog or a webpage. It allows readers to comment, authors can collaborate and write about a topic. Google claims that they will not act as editor to articles that are published on Knol. Will Knol be able to topple Wikipedia? Will bloggers want to use Knol to write articles where they can post on their own blog? I am a skeptic on this product. I will have to wait and see how it develops. At the moment, only invited authors are allowed to test drive Knol.

Knol was just a Codename. The real name according to the Wikipedia story on this subject, the name of this project is:
“Uni Pedia”
Apparently standing for Google’s “Universal Encyclopedia”
You are right Thomas.
“Knol” was just the codename for this project. I personally know a google employee who was working on this project, but he says it is not what google call a “GP 1″ an “urgent” project.
He was called away to work on a GP1. He says the REAL name of the project is
“Google’s Universal Encyclopedia” or “Uni Pedia”.
Just thought you should know.
