This morning I read on digg.com about Facebook’s intention to buy one of the largest Chinese social networking site called zhanzou.com for $85 million but later I read on allfacebook.com that the news is a rumour. The author of allfacebook.com contacted Facebook’s PR and Facebook confirmed it is a rumour. It is stated that Facebook will extend the site to the Chinese market by developing the site to support Chinese characters.
I think this is a tricky strategy because how would Facebook serve relevant ads in two languages and how would you add a group or friend if you don’t understand Chinese. The whole concept of social networking sites is to allow interaction and communication between members and if you don’t speak or write the same language, what is the point. It makes sense for Facebook to buy a zhanzou.com since it is an established social networking site but I guess the guys with the money have other plans. What are your thoughts?
