Google is not using the standards-based Java Micro Edition (JME) to run Android applications. Instead Google wrote its own virtual machine called Dalvik and Sun is not impressed with Google. There are many speculations why Dalvik is used instead of JME.
One of the reason could be that this is Google’s way of getting arond licensing issues. I read that mobile phones using JME must license it from Sun if any modifications are to be made. A handset maker can only use the open-source license for JME if they freely share the software innovations with the community and not many companies would do that not even Google.
Is Google heading for a showdown with Sun?
