Today we see the launch of Android SDK, the open source platform for mobile phones. Nick Sears the co-founder of Android said that it was too difficult to get products out to the consumers in a timely fashion and they thought the missing link was not having an open platform. That was the motivation for the development of Android.

So what exactly is the Android platform and what can it do? Android is a software stack of an operating system, middleware and key applications. Android’s system architecture is built on a Linux 2.6 kernel. What sits on top of the kernel are the libraries and Android runtime, the Application Framework and the Applications that mobile phone users will use on a daily basis.

Steve Horowitz, the Engineering Director did a demo on a handset running Android. You can watch the video on the www.openhandsetalliance.com website. You can navigate around applications using the screen and the touching capabilities built in Android. In Steve Horowitz’s demo he showed the integration between contacts and mapping application. He also did a quick demo on text notifications and showed off the high speed 3G application using a web browser and you can see websites like what you see on your desktop. The graphical interface is very sleek. Android combines 2D and 3D graphics and the quality of graphics rendering on the handset was quite impressive when Steve Horowitz showed a demo of a game running on the handset.

All in all Android will bring us into the future of mobile applications. It is difficult to have a phone do whatever you want it to do but now it is possible. Google’s Sergey Brin announced the Android developer challenge, where the prize money is $10 million for the creation the best applications for Android.
