Today Facebook published their new advertising solution on their blog. The focus is on ad relevancy. That means the advertisements will be more targeted and meaningful. The ads will be tailored to a Facebook member’s interests but with the privacy of not revealing personal information to advertisers. What is interesting is Facebook will introduce what they call Social ads where the ads shown are based on related actions Facebook friends take on the site.
That means the little footprint you leave on the site will be picked up by Facebooks ad system and used to serve related ads. Facebook will also give the option to let news feed share off-site actions with friends. Currently it has been mentioned that the off-site actions will be provided by companies like Blockbuster and Coca-Cola. Example if you rent say a movie from Blockbuster, the information will be available in Facebook for friends to see. It all sounds interesting for Facebook but how long will it be before they decide to change their stand of information protection and start sharing members data with advertisers?
